Davidson College offers a dance program that integrates the study of dance into a rigorous liberal arts curriculum. Through the Dance minor, students are invited to explore both the theory and practice of dance, by taking courses that position dance as a rich artistic tradition and an approach to cultural understanding. Students need not be a Dance minor to be involved in the performance opportunities.
Unlike what many students have experienced in their studio training and/or high school curriculum, college-level dance courses often ask students to consider their own practice and to evaluate their own relationship to the dance they are studying. At Davidson, such exploration is actively encouraged and frequently required, as our classes integrate reading, writing, and reflection into studio experiences. Working closely with faculty, students involved in dance create supportive communities, in which they can explore their own interests and capacities as dance artists and scholars. Students are encouraged to attend the master classes and performances hosted by the department.
