Johnson C Smith University

Johnson C. Smith University is a private, liberal arts, Historically Black University, located just minutes from Uptown Charlotte. JCSU offers a major, minor and concentration in Dance. Students immerse themselves in the esthetics of concert and social dance, exploring the history of African Diaspora through research and movement. JCSU dancers become independent scholars, using their critical thinking to present research in writing and choreography. Recent graduates of JCSU perform professionally throughout the Unites States and abroad, accept jobs with The Walt Disney Company or various cruise lines, teach in K-12 education, or attend graduate school.

Students studying Dance at JCSU enjoy learning in small classroom settings. Faculty work with each individual student to create their academic path, allowing them to double major or minor in a chosen field. We help dancers secure unique internships that often lead to full time employment. Students have the opportunity to create and perform choreography several times throughout the academic year. They learn hands-on production experience including lighting, technical design, music and film editing and collaborate with fellow students, faculty and local Charlotte artists in cross-disciplinary areas. Students can audition to perform and travel in the JCSU Repertory Dance Company, performing locally and nationally.
